Sørenga

45 minutes
Sørenga is a new waterfront quarter built on what used to be Oslo's container terminal. Until the early 2000s, this was a working port with cranes, containers and freight trucks. When the port operations moved, the entire area was redeveloped into a residential neighbourhood with around 800 apartments, restaurants, cafes and a harbour promenade. The first residents moved in around 2015.

The main attraction for visitors is Sørenga Sjøbad, Oslo's largest seawater swimming facility. A wooden floating jetty extends into the fjord with diving boards, a 50-metre swimming lane and a 200-square-metre seawater pool. The Guardian once listed it among the top ten best seawater pools in Europe. On warm summer days it gets extremely crowded; this is where half of Oslo seems to come to swim, sunbathe and socialise. If you prefer less company, come early in the morning or try one of the beaches on Bygdøy instead.

A floating pedestrian bridge connects Sørenga to the Bjørvika side, so you can walk directly from the Opera House across to the swimming area. The neighbourhood sits right in front of the Opera and the Munch Museum, making it easy to combine a museum visit with a swim, which in summer is a very Oslo thing to do.
