Ekebergrestauranten

60 minutes
Ekebergrestauranten sits at the top of the Ekeberg hill, right at the entrance to Ekebergparken, and it commands one of the most famous views in Norwegian art history. This is the spot where Edvard Munch is believed to have experienced the moment of existential dread that inspired The Scream. Looking out from here, you see the city, the fjord and the sky in a composition that is recognisably the same vista Munch painted in 1893.

A restaurant has stood here since the 1920s. The current building, renovated in the functionalist style, reopened in 2012 after years of disrepair. It now operates as an upscale dining establishment with large windows to make the most of the view. Even if you do not eat here, the terrace and the area around the building are public, so you can enjoy the panorama for free.

The restaurant is accessible by tram 13 or 19 to the stop Ekebergparken. It is a natural starting or ending point for a walk through the sculpture park, and on a clear evening, the view of the sunset over the fjord is hard to beat.
