Måbødalen is one of the most dramatic stretches of road in Norway. The valley rises 700 metres over just six kilometres between Eidfjord and Vøringsfossen.
Before 1790 this valley was almost impassable. Then bridges and a stairway with 1,300 stone steps were built for travellers crossing between east and west. In 1872 a bridle path was added for English tourists wanting to see the waterfall. The first road with tunnels came in 1928. Today's route has four tunnels, including a spiral section.
Stop in the bays between tunnels for views. The old road is closed to cars but you can still walk it.
