Hardangerbanen

The cycling and hiking path you might notice running parallel to the road is the old Hardangerbanen railway line.

This was a 27-kilometre branch line connecting Voss to Granvin on the Hardangerfjord.
Construction started in 1921 but it didn't open until 1935 - Norway's first railway to open with electric power from day one.

Three small electric trains ran the line for fifty years. They were NSB Class 64 units, built specially for this route in 1934 - the shortest electric multiple units NSB ever used. The same trains served the entire life of the line. When no politician wanted to fund replacements, passenger services stopped on 2 June 1985. Freight lasted until 1989.

Then came the demolition. In 1991, they tore up 21 kilometres of track. Only the first 3 kilometres from Voss to Palmafoss remain as an active freight siding.

The rest became a cycling path. From Palmafoss to Skjervet it's now asphalted. The section from Nesheim continues as a hiking trail. Station buildings at Nesheim and Granvin still stand, but Palmafoss, Mønshaug and Skjervet stations were demolished.

Two of those original Class 64 trains survived. They're preserved at Garnes Station near Bergen, part of the Gamle Vossebane heritage railway.
