Bordalsgjelet is a narrow gorge within walking distance of Voss centre. The name means "Bordal canyon" - gjel being the Norwegian word for a river-carved V-shaped valley.

The geology here tells an interesting story. Before the ice ages, the Bordalen valley floor sat about 100 metres higher than today. Then glaciers carved out the main valley and Lake Vangsvatnet much deeper. This gave the Bordalselva river a steeper drop and more energy to cut downward. The bedrock is phyllite, which is relatively soft and easy for water to carve, especially when the river carries harder stones that scour the bottom.

Inside the gorge you can see giant potholes drilled into the rock by swirling water and stones over thousands of years. The river follows fracture lines in the bedrock, changing direction sharply - you'll notice 90-degree bends where the channel switches from one fracture to another.

There's a nature trail into the gorge with viewpoints, benches, and information boards. The walk from Voss centre is about 5 kilometres round trip, taking around 90 minutes. You cross the Tintra bridge over the Vosso river, then follow signs through residential streets to the gorge entrance.

The path is easy but can be slippery. Stay on marked trails and don't climb over fences - the drops are real. Season is May to November when there's no ice. If you want a botanical treat, look for muskroot beside the path in May - small plants with green flowers.
