Geiranger
Questions & Answers
What is the best way to experience Geirangerfjord? ▾
The classic way is by ferry or sightseeing boat between Geiranger and Hellesylt, which passes directly under the Seven Sisters and Suitor waterfalls. You can also kayak the fjord for a more intimate experience, or drive up to the Ørnesvingen (Eagle Road) and Dalsnibba viewpoints for views from above. A combination of boat and viewpoints gives the fullest experience.
Is Geiranger very crowded in summer? ▾
Yes. Geiranger is one of Norway's most visited cruise ship ports, and on days when large ships dock the tiny village can feel overwhelmed. The busiest period is July and early August. For a quieter experience, visit in early June or September, or time your fjord cruise for early morning before the cruise ship passengers disembark.
Are diesel-powered cruise ships still allowed in the fjord? ▾
Norway is phasing in zero-emission requirements for the UNESCO World Heritage fjords, including Geirangerfjord. From 2026, only zero-emission vessels are allowed in the heritage fjords. This means fewer and smaller cruise ships, which may actually improve the visitor experience on the water. The car ferry between Geiranger and Hellesylt is being replaced with electric or hybrid vessels.
