Tyrvefjøra

ℹ️ Practical Fjord Hardanger

Tyrvefjøra

5 minutes
If you need a break, Tyrvefjøra is one of the more unusual rest stops in Norway. It opened in 2022 as part of the National Tourist Routes programme.

The architects from Helen & Hard designed the toilets to look like massive tree trunks growing from the rocks. The outer walls are built from actual pine trunks taken from the surrounding Hardangerfjord forests - roots and all. Workers had to go into the woods with excavators to topple trees at exactly the right angle to get the root systems they needed.

Above the two toilet buildings floats a heavy concrete roof that looks like a slab of rock suspended in mid-air. The whole thing is meant to blend into the landscape, as if the building grew here naturally.

The rest area sits in a small bay with views across the Hardangerfjord. There are picnic tables and benches made from logs.
