The Sjoa river is considered one of the best whitewater rivers in Europe, and rafting here has been popular since the late 1980s.

The river starts at lake Gjende, almost 1000 metres up in Jotunheimen. From there it flows through the Sjodalen valley and down through Heidal. The emerald-green glacial meltwater passes through narrow gorges, small waterfalls, and rapids ranging from class 3 to class 5. The most challenging section is right at the end, where the river meets the Lågen.

In 1973, the Norwegian Parliament voted to permanently protect the Sjoa from hydropower development. That decision preserved the natural flow that makes the river what it is today.

Several companies offer trips here, from gentle family outings suitable for children from around 7 years old, to full-day adventures through the most demanding sections. You can also try river boarding, canyoning, or bridge jumping. The season runs from May to October, though water levels vary. The rafting bases are in Heidal, and most offer accommodation, food, and packages combining different activities.
