Knutshøe sits right next to the famous Besseggen ridge in Jotunheimen. This 1516-metre mountain offers a shorter but far more dangerous alternative to its popular neighbour. The 12.5-kilometre hike takes about seven hours and climbs 600 metres.

But here's the thing - this is genuinely one of Norway's most dangerous day hikes. There are two extremely steep sections with serious exposure where one wrong step could send you tumbling 20 to 30 metres down the mountainside. The National Park authorities have actually removed all signs and safety cables to discourage casual hikers. They're trying to reduce pressure on the fragile environment.

The tiny car park fills up quickly in summer, with cars lining the road. The hiking season is incredibly short. Eagles nest here until mid-July, and snow often arrives by late September. Come in July and you'll be battling mosquitoes in the marshy sections near Leirung lake.

From the summit, you get spectacular views over Besseggen and Gjende lake. But honestly, unless you're an experienced mountain hiker comfortable with exposure, stick to Besseggen instead. This one has claimed lives.
