Kvernsteinsparken in Hyllestad sits inside Scandinavia's largest Viking Age and medieval stone quarries. Millstones were quarried here by hand for over 1,300 years, from the 8th century through to modern times, carved from the local garnet mica slate. The quarries exported millstones to Denmark, Sweden and northern Germany, making Hyllestad one of the most important production sites in medieval Northern Europe. Another notable product was large stone crosses, set up at strategic locations along the entire western coast between the 9th and 11th centuries. Today the open-air museum takes visitors through the quarry landscape with walking paths among half-finished millstones still embedded in the rock face, abandoned workbenches and tool marks that reveal the production process step by step. Indoor exhibits cover the geology, trade networks and craft traditions behind the industry.
