Huk Beach

120 minutes
Huk is the most famous beach in Oslo, located at the southern tip of the Bygdøy peninsula. It is not a tropical sand beach; this is Norway, so expect a mix of grass, rocks and small patches of sand. But on a warm summer day, it fills up with hundreds of Oslo residents swimming, sunbathing and having picnics, and the atmosphere is genuinely lively.

There is one important thing to know before choosing where to lay your towel. Huk is divided by a small rocky headland into two distinct sections. The eastern side is the regular beach. The western side is the nudist beach, Huk Naturiststrand. If you are the only person wearing a swimsuit, you are on the wrong side. The nudist beach is well-established and has been in use for decades, so there is nothing unusual about it by Norwegian standards; just be aware of the division so you end up where you want to be.

Nearby, within walking distance, are two other bathing spots: Paradisbukta, a more sheltered cove popular with families, and Bygdøy Sjøbad a bit further north with a sandy beach and bathing jetty. All three are free to use.

You can reach Huk by bus 30 to Bygdøynes and walking from there, or by the summer ferry from Aker Brygge. On the hottest days, expect competition for the best spots, so arriving before noon is advisable.
