Vegatrappa is a wooden staircase climbing from the shore to the summit of Ravnfloget, 450 metres above sea level. Almost 2,000 steps of royal-impregnated timber, with sturdy handrails and picnic areas along the way.
The staircase was built in 2020 by the local sports club Vega IL. To fund it, individual steps were sold for 1,070 NOK each, with the donor’s name on a brass plaque. All 2,000 steps were sold. It is a community project in the truest sense: the people of Vega literally built and paid for their own stairway to the top.
Along the route you will pass artistic animal figures carved into the landscape. At one point there is a crossroad leading to the starting point of a Via Ferrata. From the summit, the view opens across the UNESCO-listed Vega archipelago and the open Norwegian Sea. NRK Nordland voted it Nordland’s most beautiful mountain hike in 2023.
The hike is free and takes about one hour up and less than 30 minutes down. The staircase was damaged by a rockfall in September 2023 but has since been repaired and reopened.
