Utsira is Norway's least populous municipality, with around 200 residents on a six-square-kilometre island far out in the North Sea. The ferry from Haugesund takes about 70 minutes, and you will feel the distance.

The island has a few notable claims. In 1926, women won the majority of the municipal council seats, and Åsa Helgesen became Norway's first female mayor. In 2004, Norsk Hydro installed a wind-hydrogen pilot project here, testing whether a remote island community could be energy self-sufficient. The two large wind turbines are still visible on the skyline.

Utsira is best known among birdwatchers. Over 300 species have been recorded during migration seasons. The island is sometimes compared to Fair Isle south of Shetland. Peak seasons are April to May and September to November. If you are not into birds, there is less to do, but the landscape is dramatic and the isolation is the point.

There is a lighthouse, a small gallery, and a handful of places to eat and sleep. The island is small enough to walk across in half an hour. Plan to spend at least half a day, and check the ferry schedule carefully as departures are limited. Bad weather can cancel sailings.
