Trolltunga
Very Difficult Questions & Answers
How long does the Trolltunga hike take? ▾
The round trip takes 10-12 hours for most hikers, covering 27 km with about 800 metres of elevation gain from the main trailhead at P2 Mågelitopp. This is a full-day commitment. Start early (before 08:00) to ensure you return before dark. A shorter route from P3 saves about 2 hours but requires a shuttle bus.
When is Trolltunga accessible? ▾
The summer season runs from roughly mid-June to mid-September, when you can hike without a guide. Outside this window (October to May), the trail is only accessible with an authorised guide due to snow, ice, and short daylight. Guided winter trips are available but require booking in advance and proper winter gear.
Do I need to be very fit to hike Trolltunga? ▾
Yes. This is a demanding mountain hike, not a casual walk. You should be comfortable hiking 25+ km over rough terrain in a single day. The trail crosses rocky plateaus, marshes, and snow patches even in summer. Bring proper hiking boots, rain gear, warm layers, food, and at least 2 litres of water. Many people underestimate this hike.
Is there a queue to take photos on Trolltunga? ▾
In peak summer (July-August), yes. Wait times of 30-60 minutes for a photo on the tongue are common on sunny days. Starting your hike very early (before 07:00) or visiting in September usually means shorter queues. Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
