Slemmestad was a cement town for almost a century. Christiania Portland Cementfabrik opened here in 1892, drawn by the rich limestone deposits in the bedrock. It was Norway's only cement factory for the next twenty-five years, and the industry shaped everything about the community: the layout, the jobs, the identity. After merging into Norcem in 1968, the factory finally closed in 1989.
The same bedrock that made the cement also preserved something far older. Slemmestad sits in the Oslofeltet, a geological region that records the period from 545 to 280 million years ago, a stretch of Earth's history not preserved elsewhere in Norway. The rocks here contain fossils from the Cambrian, Ordovician, and Silurian periods: trilobites, cephalopods, and ancient snails from a time when this part of Scandinavia lay at the bottom of a tropical sea.
The most spectacular find is recent. Next to Slemmestad secondary school, geologists uncovered a petrified seabed the size of a football pitch, covered in thousands of cephalopod fossils. The local geology center, Trilobox, holds Norway's finest collection of trilobites, thirty-five jet-black specimens from local rock. After Kolsås, this is probably the most-studied geological site in Norway.
A coastal walking path connects Slemmestad with Vollen and Vettre along the Oslofjord shoreline, an easy route on small roads and well-maintained trails.
