Oscarshall on the Bygdøy peninsula was built as a royal summer palace dedicated to art, music and poetry. Completed in 1852 for King Oscar I, it was designed by architect Johan Henrik Nebelong in a Neo-Gothic style and decorated by leading Norwegian artists of the period, including Adolph Tidemand and Hans Gude. The palace is open to the public from May through August, with guided tours available Thursday to Sunday. The surrounding gardens and cafe can be visited without a ticket.
