Os i Østerdalen: Last Stop Before Røros

60 minutes
Os sits where the Glomma meets the Vangrøfta river, at the northern end of Østerdalen proper. The village has long been a junction: from here, the road turns northeast toward Røros. Starting in the 1600s, timber export down the Glomma brought serious wealth to forest owners in these parts, and the old farmsteads reflect it. Oddentunet at Narjordet is a well-preserved protected farmyard that shows what that prosperity looked like in practice.

Os is also the gateway to Forollhogna National Park, a quiet mountain plateau of rolling hills, reindeer grazing land, and old summer farm traditions. Compared to the dramatic peaks elsewhere in Norway, Forollhogna is gentle and understated, which is exactly its appeal. No steep cliffs, no crowds, just open plateau and silence.
