Northern Lights Cathedral

30 minutes
Nordlyskatedralen, the Northern Lights Cathedral, opened in 2013 as both Alta's main parish church and a concert venue. Designed by the Danish firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the building rises in a dramatic spiral of titanium-clad panels that twist upward like a frozen wave of aurora.

The structure covers 4,000 square metres and houses two main spaces: a church seating 350 and a concert hall seating 450. At night, coloured LED lights embedded in the glass facade recreate the shimmer of the northern lights, making the building a landmark visible across town.

The architecture reflects Alta's identity as a northern lights destination. The spiralling exterior was inspired by both the aurora borealis and the shape of the Sami lavvo tent. Inside, the acoustics were tuned for both worship and performance, and the venue hosts concerts, festivals, and cultural events throughout the year.

The cathedral replaced Alta's previous church, which had served the congregation since the town was rebuilt after the German destruction of 1944. The building sits in the town centre, making it an easy stop while passing through.
