Norsk Folkemuseum is one of the world's oldest and largest open-air museums, spread across a hillside on Bygdøy. It contains 158 original buildings from all over Norway, spanning from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, and is the place to understand how Norwegians actually lived across the centuries.

The museum was founded in 1894 by Hans Aall, at a time when Norway was still in a union with Sweden and national identity was a burning issue. Collecting and preserving traditional buildings and objects was a political act as much as a cultural one. In 1907, the museum absorbed the King Oscar II Collection, which had been established in 1881 and is recognised as the world's first open-air museum. Its centrepiece was, and still is, the stave church from Gol.

The Gol stave church dates to around 1200. When the parish built a new church in the 1880s, the old one was to be demolished. The Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments bought the timbers, and King Oscar II financed the relocation and reconstruction on Bygdøy. It is one of the best preserved stave churches in Norway, dark and atmospheric inside, with carved dragon heads and tar-blackened walls.

The outdoor area is divided into regions. There are complete farmsteads from Setesdal, Telemark, Numedal, and Trøndelag, reassembled exactly as they stood. There is also an Old Town section with urban buildings from Oslo, Brevik, and Kragerø, including a row of apartments furnished to show how families lived in different decades, from the 1890s through the 1970s. Walking through them is like stepping through a century in fifteen minutes.

During summer, the museum comes alive with craft demonstrations, folk dancing, and horse-drawn carriage rides. During the first two weekends of December, there is a large Christmas market and the historic buildings are decorated as they would have been in their original time and place. Plan at least half a day if you visit on a day with activities.
