Moi is the administrative centre of Lund municipality in Rogaland, marking where the Sørlandsbanen crosses the county border from Agder. The station opened in 1943, but Moi had been a railway town long before that. The original Flekkefjordbanen, a narrow-gauge line from Egersund through Moi and Sira to Flekkefjord, was completed in 1904. When the Sørlandsbanen main line was built through the interior in 1943, the Egersund-Sira section was absorbed and rebuilt to standard gauge, while the Sira-Flekkefjord stretch became a branch line that lingered on until 1990. The current station building is a piece of that older railway, restored from the Flekkefjordbanen era.

Moi also serves as a gateway to the Sirdal mountains. The road north from here climbs into one of Southern Norway's most popular areas for hiking, skiing, and cabin holidays, with access to the Sirdalsheiene highlands and the northern end of Lysefjorden.
