Helleren - Houses Under the Rock

30 minutes
Helleren is two old houses built directly under a massive rock overhang in Jøssingfjord. The rock acts as a natural roof, protecting the buildings from the weather. Both houses date back to the 1800s.

People actually lived here year-round, using the giant rock shelf above as shelter. It's quite clever when you think about it. The location looks almost impossible, tucked right into the cliff face.

The houses sit in Jøssingfjord, which has its own dark history. This is where the German ship Altmark was attacked in 1940, an event the Germans later used to justify invading Norway.

Unfortunately, the interiors of the houses are now closed to visitors to protect them. You can still walk around the houses as long as you respect the barriers.

The whole setup is quite remarkable - these aren't just tourist attractions, they were real homes where families raised children and lived their entire lives.
