Lyngør was named Europe's best-preserved village in 1991, and the award is easy to understand. This tiny settlement spans four islands off the coast of Tvedestrand, reachable only by boat. There are no cars, no modern intrusions: just wooden houses from the age of sail, stone quays, and narrow paths between them. The village thrived as a harbour for sailing ships but went quiet when steam power arrived, and the resulting lack of development is precisely what preserved it.
About 100 people live here year-round. A grocery shop, a restaurant, and a few places to stay make up the services. The appeal is the atmosphere: stepping off the boat onto Lyngør feels like arriving in a different century.
