Kopervik

30 minutes
Kopervik is the administrative capital of Karmøy municipality, which covers the entire island plus some of the mainland. The town has about 11,500 people and sits on the eastern shore, facing the sheltered Karmsundet strait.

It became an official town in 1866, when the herring trade was booming and the harbour was full of boats. The town lost that status in 1965 when it was merged with Avaldsnes, Stangaland, Torvastad, Skudenes, and Åkra to form the new Karmøy municipality. It got the title back in 1996 after a change in the law. Two other towns exist on the island: Åkrehamn on the west coast and Skudeneshavn at the southern tip.

Kopervik is not a tourist destination. It is where the municipal government sits, where the public library is, and where practical business gets done. The harbour area has some older wooden buildings, but the town is mostly functional.

Local politics here made national headlines in 2023. Former mayor Jarle Nilsen from the Labour Party lost the election but his allies in the council immediately voted to create a brand new position called "political resource" with a salary of 600,000 kroner per year. Everyone understood it was made for him. The opposition called it gross favoritism and demanded a legality review. The County Governor ruled it was technically legal, but the story was picked up by VG and NRK as a textbook example of political cronyism in small-town Norway. Nilsen eventually moved on to a different job.
