The Kirsten Flagstad Museum in Hamar is dedicated to one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century. Flagstad (1895-1962) was born in Hamar and became the world's leading Wagnerian soprano, celebrated for her powerful voice and commanding stage presence.

Her international breakthrough came in 1935 when she debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Sieglinde in Die Walküre. She was 39 years old and had been considering retirement. Instead, she became the Met's biggest star overnight. Critics called her voice a force of nature. Over the following years she sang at the world's greatest opera houses, becoming synonymous with Wagner's heroines.

The war years complicated her legacy. Flagstad returned to Nazi-occupied Norway in 1941 to be with her husband, a decision that led to accusations of collaboration. After the war, she was cleared of wrongdoing, but the controversy followed her. She rebuilt her career and in 1958 became the first director of the newly founded Norwegian National Opera.

The museum displays costumes, personal belongings, photographs, and recordings that trace her journey from a musical family in Hamar to the world's greatest stages. Listening stations let visitors hear her legendary voice in key performances.
