Kalvøysund festning on Flostaøya was one of the largest German fortifications in southern Norway. Built in 1941 to guard the eastern sea approach to Arendal, the complex covered 42 decares and included around 50 buildings and bunkers. Four artillery positions held French-made Schneider guns with a range of 12 kilometres.

After the war, the Norwegian military used the fort until 1959. Today the grounds are a public recreation area with bunkers to explore, scenic coastal views, and picnic spots among the old emplacements.
