Indreeidstunnelen / Old Mountain Road

At this point, the road splits into two options. One is the Indreeidstunnelen, a 4.9 kilometre tunnel that was opened in March 2024. The other is the old mountain road over Korsmyra.

The tunnel was built to secure 13 avalanche-prone points on the old road between Eidsdal and Geiranger. It cost over one billion kroner and gives the 230 residents of Geiranger a safe year-round connection to the outside world. Before the tunnel, this stretch was frequently closed in winter due to avalanches, sometimes leaving the village completely isolated.

The road is designed to guide traffic into the tunnel, so that is where most people end up. But if it is summer and the old road is open, you can take it instead. The old road passes through open mountain landscape at about 640 metres above sea level and is part of the National Tourist Route. It is quieter, with no traffic noise, and gives you a very different experience. In winter, the old road is closed and the tunnel is your only option.

Both routes meet again at the top of the Eagle Road above Geiranger.
