Hallingby is a small village you pass on the E16 heading towards Valdres. It was the administrative centre of the former municipality Ådal, which became part of Ringerike in 1964.
The name has nothing to do with salt, despite what you might read about Austrian places like Hallstatt. In Old Norse, "hallr" means rock or sloping terrain, and "by" means village.
Hallingby was one of five stations on the Sperillbanen, the abandoned railway we mentioned earlier. The station served the village until the line closed in 1957.
The main landmark is Hval Church, an octagonal timber church built in 1862. The church was designed using the same drawings originally created by architect Christian Heinrich Grosch for the Nes Church.
