Gladstad

Gladstad is the main settlement on Vega and the administrative centre of the municipality. About 300 people live here, which makes it the closest thing the island has to a town.

This is where you find the practical things: a Coop supermarket, a petrol station, the school, and the municipal offices. The Vega Church, a wooden church from 1864, stands in the village. The express boat from Brønnøysund arrives at Rorøy, just south of Gladstad, a couple of times a day.

The village itself is small and flat, but the 803-metre Trollvasstinden looms in the southwest behind it, giving the island a dramatic profile that you do not expect from a distance. If you are exploring Vega for the day, Gladstad is your base for supplies and orientation before heading out to the beaches, the Vegatrappa, or the World Heritage Centre.
