Espenes is one of Norway's architectural scenic route rest stops. It opened in 2022 after pandemic delays and steel shortages. The structure cost 40 million kroner.

The steel canopy stretches 64 metres long with 12 roof modules at different heights. The wavy shape was calculated from wind forces. The design mirrors both the horizontal fjord and the jagged peaks around you.

Toilets are in the higher section near the road. The seating area under the lower roof has a view north along Sørfjorden. At night, the lighting stays deliberately dim to preserve the fjord view.

This spot has long been a rest area on Road 13. When the road was upgraded, it became a construction laydown and was left as flat gravel. The scenic route project transformed it.

Toilets open early April to mid-October. No emptying of motorhome or caravan toilets. No camping allowed.
