Byrkjelo

20 minutes
Byrkjelo is a small village in Gloppen municipality, roughly halfway along E39 between Skei and Sandane. It sits at the northern end of Våtedalen, where the narrow valley opens out into the farmland of Breim. The junction with Fv60, the main road east to Stryn and Loen, is right here.

The village has two things worth knowing about. One is the Tine dairy, one of the largest in western Norway. Tanker trucks from farms across a big slice of Sunnfjord and Nordfjord converge on this place, and the cheese or milk you buy later in your trip may well have passed through these doors. The other is Byrkjelo stadion, a combined football and athletics ground that hosts a handful of fairly large summer meets.

For the passing driver, Byrkjelo is practical more than scenic. Fuel, a supermarket, a few places to eat. The dark peak towering south of the village is Eggenipa (1,338 metres), standing over the valley you just drove through or are about to drive through.
