Stryn

60 minutes
Stryn is the main town in this part of Nordfjord, with about 7,000 people. It is the biggest tourism municipality in western Norway outside the cities, which says something about how many visitors pass through here on their way to glaciers, mountains, and fjords.

The town itself is a service centre, the kind of place where you fill up the car, buy groceries, and maybe stay the night. Visnes Hotel has been here since 1887 and is one of those grand old Norwegian hotels that were built for the first wave of tourists who came by steamship. The Jostedalsbreen National Park Centre is also here if you want to understand the glacier before you go and look at it.

Stryn sits where the river Stryneelva meets the fjord, and the setting is pleasant enough. But most people treat it as a base rather than a destination, and that is a fair assessment.
