Skei

Skei is the small village at the northeastern end of Jølstravatnet, and one of the most important road junctions in western Norway. Road 5 from Sogndal and Fjærland meets European route E39, the coastal highway that runs from Kristiansand to Trondheim. From here you can head south to Førde and Bergen, north to Nordfjordeid and Ålesund, or east through the long tunnel to the Sognefjord.

There is not much to the village itself. A hotel, a petrol station, a few houses, a cemetery by the lake. It is a place most travellers pass through rather than visit, but it is a useful place to stop, refuel, and decide which direction to take next.

If the weather is cooperating, the view west along the 30 kilometre lake is the main reason to linger. The lake is the defining feature of the whole Jølster valley.
