Bindal / Nordlandsbåt tradition

Open in map
30 minutes
Bindal is the southernmost municipality in Nordland, and this is where you cross from Trøndelag into Northern Norway. The main settlement is Terråk.

What makes Bindal worth knowing about is the Nordlandsbåt tradition. These are the traditional clinker-built wooden boats that were used all along the Northern Norwegian coast for centuries. The boatbuilding craft is recognised by UNESCO, and in Bindal it is still kept alive. Each summer you can see the boats in their element during the Nordlandsbåt regatta at Terråk. If you happen to be driving through during the regatta, it is a rare chance to see living maritime heritage rather than museum pieces.
