Urnes Stave Church

60 minutes
Urnes stavkirke is the only stave church on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It stands on the eastern shore of the Lustrafjord, just above the hamlet of Ornes. Parts of the building date back to the 11th century, making it one of the oldest wooden churches in Europe.

What sets it apart is the carved animal ornamentation on the north wall, known as the Urnes style. The intertwining figures of animals and serpents are considered the finest example of this late Viking decorative art. Inside, the painted decorations are remarkably well preserved.

To get there, take the small ferry from Solvorn across the fjord. From Ornes, it is a short uphill walk to the church. The interior can only be visited from May to September with a guided tour. Check opening times before crossing, as the ferry has limited departures.

The setting is spectacular. The church sits on a hillside overlooking the fjord, surrounded by old fruit trees. On a clear day you can see the glacier-capped mountains across the water.
