Gaupne is the administrative centre of Luster municipality and the main service town on the Lustrafjord. It has shops, hotels, and a public swimming pool. Not a destination in itself, but a practical stop if you need anything.
The main reason Gaupne matters is the junction. From here, a road heads north into Jostedal, the valley that gives Jostedalsbreen glacier its name. This is the access route to Nigardsbreen, the most visited glacier arm, as well as Bergsetbreen and Tunsbergdalsbreen. If you are heading to the glaciers from the Sognefjord side, you pass through Gaupne.
