Tyristrand is a small village on the western shore of Tyrifjorden, between Vikersund and Hønefoss. The name comes from Old Norse meaning "pine strand" — referring to old or dead pine wood along the shore. Tyristrand station connected to the Randsfjordbanen in 1867. The village was its own municipality from 1916 until 1964, when it merged into Ringerike.
Just south of the village lies Ringerike fengsel, a high-security prison opened in 1997 with capacity for 160 inmates. The facility is surrounded by a 7-metre high wall stretching over a kilometre. In 2022, Anders Behring Breivik was transferred here from Skien prison. The location drew some controversy as the prison overlooks Tyrifjorden , the same body of water where Utøya is located, about a mile away by air.
