Tvedestrand is a small coastal town where white wooden houses cling to steep slopes around a narrow harbour. Over 2,000 buildings in the municipality are more than a century old, giving it an unusually well-preserved feel. The town has reinvented itself as a book town, with antiquarian bookshops tucked into old buildings. The archipelago offshore includes the car-free islands of Sandøya and Lyngør, both worth a boat trip. In summer the population doubles with cabin visitors.
