Surnadal & Surna

🏘️ Town Valley Nordmøre

Surnadal & Surna

60 minutes
Surnadal is Nordmøre's inland heartland, a broad river valley where the Surna flows calmly from the Trollheimen mountains to the fjord at Surnadalsøra. The river is one of Norway's finest salmon waters, with 78 km of fishable stretches divided into 18 beats and a record catch of 26 kg. Salmon run from the power station dam at Harrangen to the outlet at the fjord.

English lords discovered Surna in the 1820s, part of the broader wave of British sportsmen who introduced fly fishing to Norwegian rivers. In the side valley of Todalen, a century-old fishing lodge still stands from that era, a reminder of when wealthy Englishmen would lease entire river sections for the season. The tradition shaped local culture: the valley learned to host, guide and cook for demanding guests long before mass tourism arrived.

Beyond fishing, Surnadal is gateway country. The valley sits between Trollheimen to the east and the coastal islands to the west, making it a natural corridor for the Fjordruta long-distance trail. The landscape shifts from alpine plateaux to pastoral farmland within a few kilometres. Surnadalsøra itself is a compact village with services, a sheltered fjord harbour and views up the valley toward the mountains.
