Støren sits where the Gaula and Sokna rivers merge, and it has been a junction since 1864 when the first railway from Trondheim reached here. The Røros Line connected in 1877, and the Dovre Line arrived from the south in 1921. Two railway routes from Oslo to Trondheim exist because of this split: the Dovre Line through Gudbrandsdalen and the Røros Line through Østerdalen. Both rejoin here, 52 kilometres south of Trondheim.
