Stuttgongkampen is a 1416 metre peak on the east side of the Sjoa valley, directly opposite Hindsæter Hotel. If you're staying in the area and want a proper mountain hike with views over Jotunheimen, this is a good choice.

The hike starts near the road, just north of Hindsæter. Cross the bridge at Stuttgongfossen, a powerful waterfall with a 22 metre drop. From there you follow the trail through Stuttgonglia Nature Reserve, which protects 16 square kilometres of old pine forest. Some of the trees here have an almost ancient character, gnarled and covered in lichen.

At Gammelsætre you'll pass some old buildings still used for livestock watching in summer. You've now covered about half the distance, but the easy part is over. From here the trail gets steep as you climb through birch forest and eventually bare rock. Expect at least three or four false summits where you think you're almost there, but you're not. When you finally reach a plateau where you can see the other side of the mountain, you're close. A cairn marks the top.

Allow about two and a half hours up, and one and a half down. The total elevation gain is around 500 metres. In winter you can do the hike on snowshoes, but don't try it on cross-country skis.

The weather up here can be brutal. On one winter visit it felt like minus 25 with the wind, cold enough that our sandwiches were half frozen by the time we wanted to eat them. Dress in layers you can remove on the way up, and bring more than you think you need.
