Setesdal Vesthei-Ryfylkeheiane is Norway's second-largest protected area, covering 2,448 square kilometres across the mountain ranges west of Setesdal into Ryfylke. Established in 2000, the landscape protection area preserves open moorland, wide valleys, and untouched mountain terrain sculpted by the last ice age, ranging from 800 to 1,600 metres in elevation. The area is critical habitat for Europe's southernmost wild reindeer population and holds numerous cultural artifacts from centuries of mountain farming and reindeer hunting.
