Suldalsvatnet is the largest lake in Rogaland, stretching 28 kilometres through the valley. It is also one of Norway's deepest - 376 metres at its deepest point.
For centuries, this lake was the main transport route through inner Suldal. A steamboat service started in 1885, and in 1939 the wooden car ferry M/F Suldalsporten entered service, carrying passengers and cars between villages along the shore.
The ferry made its last voyage on New Year's Eve 1978, when the new road along the lake opened. Six months later, on 4 July 1979, someone sank her illegally near Lalid. She is still down there in the darkness.
At the narrow passage called Suldalsporten - where two mountains form a gate on each side of the water - you will find one of the classic Ryfylke views. According to local legend, the mountainsides will collapse on the day seven sisters marry and travel through the gate together.
If you are interested in fishing, the lake holds brown trout. There is even an annual Storaure festival in Nesflaten celebrating the big ones.
