A watermill has stood at this site in Degernes since 1650. The current building dates from 1904 and is the last of its kind in the county, the only surviving mill with an overshot water wheel. In an overshot wheel, water is fed from above into buckets along the rim, and gravity does the work. It is a more efficient design than the undershot wheels common elsewhere, but requires a reliable height difference in the water supply.
The mill ground grain for local farmers until 1932. After decades of disuse, a four-year restoration brought it back to working condition for its centenary in 2004. Guided tours and milling demonstrations are available by arrangement.
