Sagedammen & Vetestova

🎭 Culture Mountain Nordfjord

Sagedammen & Vetestova

30 minutes
Along the Panoramavegen, county road 613, you will find two stops that tell very different stories about life in these mountains.

Sagedammen is a restored sawmill powered by water. The frame saw here is a proper old one, the kind that cuts timber slowly but steadily using nothing but the force of falling water. These mills were everywhere in rural Norway, and this is one of the few that has been kept in working condition. It sits along a cultural heritage trail that is worth a short walk.

Vetestova is a beacon watchtower, part of the old warning system that stretched along the Norwegian coast. When enemies were spotted, fires would be lit on high points to pass the message from one community to the next. What makes this one special is that it is the only beacon watchtower in Norway still standing in its original location. Most were moved to museums or fell apart centuries ago. This one stayed put.
