Why are the rock carvings so hard to see? ▾
For decades, Norwegian rock carvings were painted red to make them easier to spot. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage has since moved away from this practice and is gradually removing the paint at sites across the country. The paint can damage the stone, hide fine details, and give a misleading impression of how the carvings originally looked. Without paint, the figures blend into the grey rock and require patience and good light conditions. Visit in early morning or late afternoon when low-angle sunlight catches the carved lines. Pouring a little water over the rock surface can also help the carvings stand out briefly.
