Ortnevik sits on the south side of the Sognefjorden, a small village with mountains on three sides and the fjord on the fourth. About 45 people live here year-round, though the population swells in summer when people return to their cabins. There is one road in and one road out.

The village has a few surprises for its size. There is a dragon-style church worth seeing, and a local man built what is claimed to be the world's smallest stave church. Less expected is that Ortnevik is home to the world's largest land-based halibut fish farm. For a place with 45 inhabitants, that is quite a claim.

A car ferry connects Ortnevik to Måren and Nordeide on the north side of the fjord. This is still a farming village at heart, with cows and sheep on the surrounding slopes. There is a small local shop and some self-catering cabins if you want to stay.
