From the Gudbrandsjuvet car park, there is a signed trail called Olavsvegen. This is the route that King Olav Haraldsson, later known as Saint Olav, took when he led his army through Valldalen in the winter of 1028 to 1029. According to Snorre Sturlason, the king camped here at Alstad while his men cleared a path through the massive boulder field called Skjersura.
The trail takes you past Olavskjelda, Saint Olav's spring, where legend says the water can cure illness, and Olavshellaren, the rock shelter where the king supposedly slept. The path continues through the scree slope between enormous boulders. It is also part of the pilgrim route from Valldal to Nidaros, present-day Trondheim, and is marked with pilgrim symbols.
