Nordhasselvika is a long sandy beach on the north side of the Lista peninsula. In May 2025, The Guardian named it one of the 20 best hidden beaches in Europe. It is the only Norwegian beach on the list.
The beach has fine, light sand and faces the open North Sea. The flat landscape and wide horizon create a quality of light that changes constantly with the weather. Swimming is possible in summer, but the water stays cold and the beach is fully exposed to wind and waves.
Behind the beach, a progressive dune system stretches inland. The entire area has been a protected bird sanctuary since 1987 and part of the Ramsar wetland system since 1996. It is one of the most important stopover points for migrating wading birds on Lista. Sandpipers hunt small crabs along the waterline, running in and out with the breaking waves. Parts of the area may have access restrictions during nesting season to protect ground-nesting birds.
