Mathallen Oslo is a food hall located at Vulkan, a redeveloped industrial area on the banks of Akerselva, right on the border of Grünerløkka. The hall opened in 2012 inside a converted industrial building and was modelled after the great food markets of southern Europe. Under its high ceilings you will find specialty food shops, delis, bakeries, cheese mongers, a chocolate maker, and several restaurants and bars. The focus is on quality ingredients, small producers and craft food, rather than fast food or mass-market chains.
The surrounding Vulkan area is named after the old Vulkan Jernstøperi, an iron foundry that operated here until the 1970s. The entire block has been transformed into a mixed-use neighbourhood with apartments, offices, a school, a cinema and more restaurants. The area was designed as one of Oslo's most energy-efficient developments, with geothermal wells, solar panels and a system that recovers waste heat from the commercial kitchens to warm the residential buildings above.
If you are looking for a place to eat that is not in the tourist centre but still easy to reach, this is a good option. The quality is generally high, and the prices range from casual street food to proper sit-down dining. Mathallen is just behind Telthusbakken and a short walk from the tram stops at Olaf Ryes plass or Schous plass.
