Maristova is a Mountain guesthouse at 830 metres with a history going back to at least the 1350s. First mentioned as a "sælehus" (travellers' shelter) in 1358, and probably named after Saint Margaret of Antioch. It remained public property until 1847.
The oldest surviving building is Margretestuen from 1791, built as lodging for the Director-General of Roads during construction of the King's Road. It's now a private museum. The original Swiss-style hotel from 1888 burned down in 1976.
If you're walking the King's Road from the east, this is where "De sju skuffelsar" - the Seven Disappointments - ends. That's what they called the descent: seven times you think you've reached the bottom, only to find another hill. Going the other way, it's seven false summits before you reach the top.
